Mood in March on Washington

The mood in the March on Washington photo is very serious yet inspiring. One can note many inspiring aspects of the photo, such as how the crowd is holding hands and singing in unison. In addition, the black and white of the photo really makes the mood more serious. If the photo were very bright and cheery, it would totally change the mood to more uplifting and cheery rather than serious. Moreover, the mood helps enforce the main message of this photo. Since the mood is more serious, it helps convey the message of how the African Americans are fighting a serious injustice in the 1960s. The mood is a very important aspect in this photo as it helps hint at the main message and helps the audience have certain reactions. For this photo in specific, the audience may feel empowered since the mood is very serious yet moving.

  1. I agree that the mood is a bit somber due to the angle of the photograph and due to the facial expressions of each individual. However, rather than expressing a somber mood, does the photo evoke specific reactions from the audience?

  2. I agree that the mood is somber due to the lack of color. However, I feel that incorporating color into the photograph would make the picture seem more real and evoke more of a reaction form the audience.

  3. I don’t necessarily think that the mood is somber in this picture. The way the picture is taken allows it to include the vast amount of people joining in together for a cause they support. With their arms linked and mouths open, singing in unity, the audience may feel impressed or even shocked at the scale of the movement.

  4. I do not think that the black and white is intended to be somber. Rather, like you wrote, the black and white invokes a serious tone to the picture. The fact that the people are not smiling and being cheery also enforces this mood. The people in the crowd have looks of passion and desire for change.

  5. I also think it's important that they seem entirely disinterested in the photographer. This is a moment in which the movement's importance transcends aesthetic pleasure or a photo opportunity.

  6. The viewpoint of the photo definitely adds to the serious mood. You can see in the background the extent of the amount of people present who came for a call of change. This monumental amount of people make the mood even more serious.

  7. I think that the various elements of the photo come together to give it a serious and somber mood. I would however be very interested to see the same photo in color. I would be interested to see if it would enhance the somber mood or change the mood entirely. I question if color would make the photo seem more cheery or if it would simply enhance the current mood of the photo.
