Million Man March to Freedom

In the photograph of the Million Man March, the dominant message portrayed is of unity and empowerment. As the African Americans are all crossing their hands and appearing as if they are singing together, it is evident that they have all joined together to fight the social injustice that occurred in the 1960s. Moreover, during this time period African Americans were treated unfairly by the rest of society. The brutal adversary faced by the African Americans contributes to the main rhetoric of fighting barriers by joining together as seen in the photo. The photograph accurately portrays the seriousness of the situation, as many of the people look emotional about fighting for their rights. In addition, because there are so many people joining together, it only adds to the rhetoric of the photo and its message of unity and togetherness. The rhetorical situation of this photograph reaches out to society and sends the message that societal injustice will not stop people if they unite together. Overall, the main rhetoric of the Million Man March is that unity and empowerment is essential and will be evident in times of adversity.

  1. Can you introduce the concept of rhetorical situation up front? That will help the reader. Also, be sure to put both your texts in the side bar, asap.

  3. I agree with your analysis of the rhetorical situation. I feel like just looking at a photo of so many people gathered, regardless of setting even, gives off a strong sense of desire to overcome something together. I am also interested in the facial expressions of those in the photograph. The exigence is more in the mass of people rather than in their faces, which to me if I look at them individually look more like they are waiting around for something than taking action.

  5. I agree with your analysis of the rhetorical situation. It is interesting how communities come together and support each other to accomplish a common goal. When a racial crime is committed, it is interesting to see how they all come together, in unity and anger at the way things are going. It kind of reminds me about how the Trayvon Martin case was portrayed by the media.
