Commit the Crime, Do the Time

As far as society has come, it has not come far enough. In every city, crime control is a big issue. As much as it has decreased, however, it still exists. The photographer captures the somber atmosphere of the event by juxtaposing a boy crying next to a homemade memorial composed of teddy bears and heart-shaped balloons. In the background, there is a woman crying to herself. Together, these appeal to pathos by showing how a crime can affect a family. The multitude of gifts in the memorial suggests that the victim had many people who cared about her. This leads to a natural assumption that most of her friends are affected similarly to the subjects in the photo, which further emphasizes the impact of the murder. By distancing the photo from the subjects, the photographer subtly respects their space and privacy. At the same time, it is taken close enough to show that if he were to walk forward a couple of steps, he would be able to comfort them. It gives a sense of urgency to help out and prevent such events from occurring to anyone else again. When coupled with the article, it creates a strong case for preventing more crime from happening.

  1. This is a really poignant analysis of the photograph; it raises a lot of good points. The idea that the photographer created exigence by choosing how far to stand from the subjects indicating both respect for their sorrow and simultaneously creating the idea that you could almost reach out to comfort them is brilliant. This photograph deeply appeals to the viewer's humanity. At least in my opinion, this is a great deal more affecting than a statistical analysis of crime.

    1. In addition to this, the pain and suffering shown in this picture definitely exemplifies exigence. The death of the victim clearly affected these people and those who presented gifts. Their anguish is visible and unavoidable, and the viewer feels complied to act out against crime to stop the suffering of others.
